What To Do If Your Hair Gets Greasy Really Fast?

We all crave for “good hair” days, right? And do you know what’s the perfect ingredient to ruin the same? Yes, you guessed it right- Greasy hair. If you are someone with oily scalp and your hair gets greasy really fast, you would know the struggle all too well. So, you wash your hair expecting it to stay all bouncy and voluminous for at least a few days and to your disappointment, it turns greasy only after a few hours. If this sounds relatable, keep reading because we have collated some wonderful ideas to help you combat that nasty hair enemy.

What Makes Hair Turn Greasy?

We all have oil glands in our scalp which secrete natural oils to keep our hair nourished but sometimes due to various reasons, the scalp produces more oil than required and in turn, makes the hair limp and greasy.

We have drafted a list of tried and tested hacks to help you get fluffy, bouncy and more balanced tresses.

1. Don’t Shampoo Your Hair Too Often

Over-washing your hair can strip all the wonderful natural oils and nutrients from your scalp making the hair weak, dull and dry. To combat the situation, the scalp starts producing more oil making the hair look greasy and limp. And the cycle goes on! The best way to break this vicious cycle is by washing your hair maximum two or three days a week.

2. Maintain Social Distancing between Your Hands and Hair

Do you have the habit to touch your hair frequently? Well, you need to stop right away. It will not only make your hair dirty with all the dust your fingers are exposed to, but also mess up with the oil glands present in the scalp and make your hair appear greasier.

3. Try the Art of “Reverse Hair Washing”

Reverse hair washing means applying conditioner to your hair first followed by the shampoo. This method makes sure that your hair gets all the conditioning benefits without making your hair feel weighed down.

4. Consider using Dry Shampoo

On the days when your hair feels oily and shampoo isn’t an option, dry shampoo comes to the rescue. It absorbs the extra oil from the scalp and leave your hair smelling clean, fresh and bouncy. However,over-usage of dry shampoo can mess up with your natural oils and clog your scalp pores.

5. Go the Natural Way

If you’ve exhausted all the commercial products options, go for the herbal hair rinse. For that, you can take 2 teaspoons of herbs such as orange peel, mint leaves, amla or nettle, put them in a pot and pour hot water on it. Cover it and leave it to steep for around 10 minutes. Strain the mixture and apply it on your scalp. This will help your hair retain its natural shine.

6. Mind your Bath Water Temperature

If you’re still using hot water to wash your hair off, it’s time to break the habit. Hot water strips off the natural oils from your scalp making your hair brittle and frizzy. The scalp glands start producing more oil to tackle the dryness ultimately making the hair get greasy really fast. The best practice is to use warm water for the wash and towards the end, you can use cold water trick to lock in the shine.

7. Try DIY Hair Masks to Control Oil

There are many natural options which can help you tackle the oiliness of your scalp. You can whip some egg whites or aloe vera mask for the same. Also, henna powder works very well to keep the grease away.

8. Change your Pillow Cases Regularly

We may not realize but our pillow cases accumulate a lot of dirt and slick over time and it not only makes the hair dirty and oily but also mess up with the skin. The best practice is to change your pillow cases every week or at least in 10 days.

9. Minimize Heat Styling

Save blow-drying and heat styling only for the special occasions as those can ruin your hair health. Heat treatments make the hair lose its lustre and make them dull and limp. Let your hair dry naturally instead and you’ll notice the difference instantly.

10. Wash your Hairbrush/Comb Regularly

A dirty hairbrush is possibly the biggest culprit in making your hair greasy and lifeless, so consider washing your combs and hairbrushes at least once a week.

11. Stop Over-Conditioning

Aren’t we all obsessed with hair conditioners as they seem to make our hair smoother than ever! But do you know over-conditioning can lead to building up of the product residues and make your hair get greasy really fast? So, next time you use conditioner, try not to go overboard.

12. Refrain from Over Brushing

They say brushing your scalp is a good practice but if you over-do it, the oil glands get active and start secreting more oil leading to a greasy scalp. So, you better keep a check on how often do you comb those lovely tresses out.

13. Unhealthy Eating Habits

Food plays a major role in how your hair and skin look like. If you’re consuming a lot of oily food, chances are there that you’ll end up with toxins in your body which erupt out of your hair as grime and oil. Switch to more plant-based options and drink plenty of water. Your hair will thank you for that.
