Dark Spots: Causes and How To Get Rid of Them?

A number of factors can contribute towards dark spots- acne, prolonged sun exposure and even hormonal changes. Hyperpigmentation or dark spots can result in uneven skin tones much like freckles or ageing. Dark spots usually spring up on you, making you wonder what you did wrong. However, there are plenty of solutions for treating them and reducing the occurrence.

While hormonal changes are not in our hands, you can always put protective sunblock before stepping out during the broad daylight. This will reduce the chances of dark spots being triggered by excessive sun exposure. Dermatologists suggest using products with blocking ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to prevent dark spots from resurfacing.

To tackle dark spots caused by hormonal changes, it’s best to go to a dermatologist for guided medical help.

Natural DIY methods for treating dark spots:

1. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is truly a hero ingredient for beauty worshippers. From DIY home facial packs to soothing skin, the humble aloe vera is up for anything! A rich source of essential vitamins and antioxidants, aloe vera is perfect for treating dark spots.

Besides, aloe vera has been said to counterbalance the effects of harmful UV radiation while also repairing the damage already caused by UV radiation. Aloe vera is also effective against fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Turmeric

Turmeric has been an age-old remedy for beauty cures and has been known to naturally lighten the skin. It is also proven to be effective in reducing skin pigmentation.
To reduce dark spots, take 2 tsp of turmeric with curd & gram flour (besan) and mix to form a smooth thick paste.

Apply this DIY turmeric pack on your face and keep it for 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and repeat this 3 times a week for effective results.

3. Green Tea Extract

Beauty experts believe that green tea extract works great on pigmented skin and can be effective in removing dark spots. Boil some water and soak a green tea bag in it. Take it out and apply the cooled down tea bag over your dark spots. Repeat this every day for better results. You can also amp up the routine by adding a green tea serum to it. Green tea is rich in powerful antioxidants called EGCG and is effective against reducing UV and DNA damage. If you’re having dark circles, placing a soaked green tea bag under your eyes before bed will help treat them. Follow this up by applying an eye cream to effectively remove dark circles.

4. Tomato Pulp

Tomato pulp is a great ingredient when it comes to battling skin pigmentation. Its astringent properties lighten the skin while also reducing the dullness. Here’s a DIY with tomato for tackling dark spots.

Make a pulp of one whole tomato and mix it with 2 tsp of fuller’s earth (multani mitti) and a tsp of fresh mint paste and apply the pack on your face. Repeat this process two times a week for de-pigmented skin.
